It happened to me too, except I guess you'd call it "trouting" in my case. He was NumericTrout. Thanks for the post - it greatly alleviated fears! And like Karina, for me, it was Xanga, but his was a livejournal. Crazy man.

Ah! ....this exact thing happened to me less than ten minutes ago, although I'd like to note that it wasn't a livejournal, but a xanga, we were both posting to; it seems this affects all (or, at least, more than one) free blog websites. Also, this may be just coincidence, but we're both in the same time zone.

The most confusing part about the whole thing is that every IM we sent was sent to the other people as this "BalefulSalmon" character, so even in trying to figure out what was happening we were still hesitant that the other might be a bot.

Very very tricky, but seemingly harmless. Quite a bit of fun. :) (And thanks for the post. When I googled the screen name, this was the first thing that came up.)

yeah I have to side with Rachel on this one.
I'm curious ... your problem with F&M (sounds like a discount clothing brand) lies in their tendency to 'explain away' the paranormal with traditional psych/science/literary symbolism type reasoning. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a major that doesn't. History of Science, I'm sure, would take the same stance on vampires. The department you're looking for is either cryptobiology, parapsychology or Hellboy. I don't think Harvard offers those, but they should. By the way - did you check out that new show the Middleman? It's the same plot as Men in Black and Hellboy, but with that sort of dry, 'indie-brand' comedy a la Juno or something. The pilot was meh but maybe I'll give it a a try. I'm sure vampires will surface eventually.

I am here on your blog because I got your email through HRGSP today and clicked through (PS: could you send me a link to the review of Patience? I am curious what it said about the trombone!).

And I redeploy your Occam's Razor right back at you: which is more likely, that the vampire myth developed in many different cultures because actually, in all these different cultures, undead bloodsuckers (or something like them) literally exist and have existed for centuries without anyone ever successfully objectively documenting this fact, or that the vampire myth is based on something in the human mind that most cultures have in common?

But then I am definitely not F&M either. :)

Damn, your blog is great because it always just speaks to me so deeply. Dude I know just where you're at right now. I could drop all of this academia and go live on a farm and fry a chicken. The other day I saw a duck with many many ducklings in a line behind it crossing the road, too! It made me think - why do we go through all this trouble to try to second-guess our own desires before we act on them? It's so easy for the duck to do what is truly important: raise a family, and then cross a road. You've changed my whole fucking perspective. In fact, I'm dropping out of school to have kids and then get them to walk around in a line behind me. And fry a chicken. On a farm. Thank you, Nightstrike, thank you.
